The Year 2026 Declared the Era of the Croaking Craze.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am certain that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the highlighted projects—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Considering a collection of frogs is known as an army, it feels they are taking over the industry.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Amphibians have been anything but new to the world of games. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have consistently maintained a cult following. Yet, their visibility has noticeably surged in recent times.

A simple search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. Granted, some of these are low-budget titles, a sizable number are bona fide amphibian adventures.

Tracking the Tadpole Trend

To grasp this rise, I performed a thorough analysis into the last half-decade of hoppy gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a consistent uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's growing prominence in the broader culture is somewhat apparent elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. But, the trend in gaming appears especially pronounced.

Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage

In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs have natural design advantages for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a standout feature in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and prehensile tongues enable a myriad of innovative control schemes.

A number of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? Given five frog games publicly revealed before the year has even begun—and the chance for more—the stage is set for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

When these games are received positively—and historically, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we may indeed be entering a genuine croaking cultural moment.
