Wonder Man Trailer Reveals Marvel's Most Self-Referential Series To Date

Marvel is aware that viewers might be experiencing some superhero exhaustion, so they've decided to include that very concept into their next superhero show.

That's right, the first preview for Wonder Man has been released, and it pledges a self-referential angle on the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

The trailer, which debuted on Oct. 10, also quietly moved the Wonder Man launch date back from its original end of 2025 window into January 2026.

Why another superhero film? Everyone is weary of superhero content. Why go see them in the theater? Wonder Man resonated with me on a deep level. There is an opportunity to shock audiences. To reimagine the whole category of narrative.

The interviewer replies: "Have you given any thought about casting?"

The trailer then transitions to lead actor Yahya Abdul-Mateen II, who's watching the conversation on his mobile device, and the trailer ends.

Key Details Regarding Wonder Man

We were previously aware that Wonder Man would be a self-referential interpretation on the Marvel Cinematic Universe. The show stars Yahya Abdul-Mateen II as the character Simon Williams, a film star who becomes a superhero (the hero Wonder Man).

The rest of the cast includes actor Ben Kingsley reprising his role as Iron Man 3's Trevor Slattery, Demetrius Grosse as Eric Williams (also known as Grim Reaper), Ed Harris as Simon's agent Neal Saroyan, and Arian Moayed returning as DODC officer P. Cleary.

Marvel's Self-Referential Comedy Approach

We don't know much else about the plot of Wonder Man, but it's evident that Marvel plans to laugh at its own tropes.

In the wake of Deadpool & Wolverine, it seems like the production company is all in on self-referential comedy. Will this approach succeed without the star power of its previous leads? We'll have to wait and see.
